through a
fascination with vernacular architecture, i’ve explored issues of
resourcefulness and necessity, the passage of time, and self expression as it
relates to the act of creating a home. these small dwellings are constructed
from bits of earth and repurposed findings. they are inspired by the
"gather and collect" rituals of outsiders and visionaries,
squatters and displaced populations who construct land-based shelter from
natural and salvaged materials. there is a random yet deliberate order of
assemblage when the means of shelter are left to chance, making each
structure a unique testament to self-reliance and creative thinking. as these
prototype dwellings come about, i leave them in various states of being, some
raw in their construction, some simply metaphors, some long ago inhabited,
ravaged now by time and weather.
